Moving Up a Weight Class: Building Kobelco’s Heavy-Duty Market Position
THE CHALLENGE
Kobelco had built a strong reputation for mini excavators, but gaining greater traction in the medium and heavy-duty earthmoving market presented a different challenge. Competing against established category leaders, the brand needed to strengthen perceptions of its heavy machinery capability, build confidence among large-scale operators, and increase genuine parts and service activity across its dealer network.
THE STRATEGY
We launched high-impact overarching brand campaigns that positioned Kobelco as an unshakeable, high-ROI alternative to the traditional category giants. We paired this masterbrand strategy with sector-specific marketing programs tailored to construction, demolition, and quarrying, alongside a dedicated “Buy Genuine Parts” campaign to boost ongoing dealer service and parts revenues.
THE SOLUTION
We created and delivered an integrated suite of campaigns across print, digital, dealerships and industry events.
Key elements included:
The “Rock Solid Investment” Campaign: A high-level brand platform highlighting long-term machine durability, low operating costs, and high resale value to fleet buyers.
The “Heavy Weight Champion” Positioning: High-impact product launch campaigns built to showcase the power and hydraulic performance of Kobelco’s heavy excavator range.
Sector-Specific Marketing Suites: Targeted marketing for construction, demolition and quarry operators, aligning product benefits with real-world applications.
“Buy Genuine Parts” Trade Campaign: Dedicated dealer and customer communications designed to increase genuine parts purchases and ongoing workshop servicing.
Showroom POS & Trade Event material: Complete sales tools including point-of-sale posters, pull-up banners, specification brochures, and digital asset toolkits.
THE RESULTS
Within three years of launching the campaign program, Kobelco became Australia’s #1 seller of heavy-duty excavation equipment, significantly strengthening its position in a market previously dominated by long-established competitors.
WHY IT WORKED
Rather than relying on a single brand campaign, we built a connected marketing program around the way Kobelco sold its machinery. Strong masterbrand positioning changed perceptions at a category level, while sector-specific campaigns gave operators relevant reasons to consider Kobelco for demanding applications. Extending the strategy into genuine parts and servicing also helped create value beyond the initial machinery sale.
